Being an empath or HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) and not practicing Reiki is like sailing a ship without an anchor-you’re just drifting in the waves.
If you already practice Reiki, this analogy is for you too because I’m sharing some practical tips on how it can help anchor and purify your energy when you’re overwhelmed.
First, let’s define three terms…
HSPs, a term that psychologist Elaine Aron created, feel other people’s energy, are easily overwhelmed by highly stimulating environments, and are more sensitive than the average person to noise, smell, light, and other stimuli.
Empaths not only feel people’s energy and emotions, but they also absorb them and sometimes experience physical symptoms as a result. If you’re an empath, you are a magnet or a sponge for other people’s “stuff.”
Many people are empathetic, but not all empathetic people are empaths or highly sensitive.
All empaths are HSPs but not all HSP’s are empaths.
To keep things simple, I’ll mention empaths in this article, but if you’re an HSP, some of the guidelines I share will also apply to you.
Had I known back then that I was an empath, things would have made sense.
When I completed my degree years ago, I was super proud and excited to start my career as a social worker. It only took a few months for me to realize that the job was not what I expected. It was harder, more emotionally draining, and less fulfilling than I imagined. I came home feeling sad and depressed every night, and my body started to show signs of illness.
I was (and still am) so passionate about helping others. I was really good at what I did, yet I felt completely unfulfilled and unhappy. I was disempowered.
Had I known back then not only that I was an empath but that I was a disempowered empath, those feelings would have made sense to me.
The year was 1996. A random ad in a local magazine led me to attend a class that changed my life. It was a Reiki class, which sparked the start of an incredible journey of healing and transformation for me.
Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive healing technique where spiritual energy flows through a person’s hands.
It is the purest, loving, positive life force that charges your body with the energy it needs to heal naturally.
You place your hands on specific body positions on yourself, others, or animals. A Reiki treatment encourages physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and brings wholeness, harmony, and balance.
Today, I live as the beacon I was born to be. I’m a guide, a mentor, and a teacher for so many women. I feel fulfilled in my work without depleting my energy because I have a solid practice of re-charging my internal batteries. I empower empaths to thrive and shine, with Reiki as my anchor.

Here is why…
When you can’t tell if an emotion is yours or someone else’s, Reiki can help you anchor in to clear your energy.
Do you sometimes experience feelings of random sadness or can’t explain a sudden change in your mood? These symptoms might indicate that you took on another person’s energy. Some empaths feel what people feel before the other person even realizes it. As a result, physical empaths might develop noticeable symptoms in their body.
Before Reiki, I would experience severe vertigo and digestion issues after doing what I love doing: serving and helping others. Today, I have the tools to stay anchored and centered in myself. Once I notice a physical manifestation of negative energy in my body, I immediately treat myself with Reiki, and it usually stops.
Emotional empaths often develop anxiety or depression. Sitting next to a depressed person on a bus or in a theater, without even talking to them, may leave you feeling depressed.
When you start every morning with a short self-Reiki treatment, you vibrate from a high level during the day. You are not as reactive to other people’s emotions. Then, when you connect with the universal energy again in the evening, the Reiki automatically clears your energy and emotions from whatever you may have picked up throughout the day.
Reiki Tip: Can’t tell if an emotion is yours? Did your mood suddenly change? Take a Reiki pause. Visualize a vertical connection, rooting yourself down into the earth and rooting up with the divine light. Ask the Reiki to clear, purify and anchor you.
For added purification, use the Reiki Shower Technique. Give yourself a quick one-position self-treatment while taking a shower and intend for the Reiki to cleanse you on the inside while the water cleanses you on the outside.
When you have emotional and sensory overload, Reiki can help you calm down.
When experiencing an emotional hangover, you may feel like a victim of your sensitivity. Spending time in big groups or stimulating environments might be too much for your nervous system. Unplugging and taking time alone helps, but you may still feel anxious or depressed, even after resting.
Physical rest is not enough. Your whole being needs to reset: emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. Integrating a self-Reiki treatment with your alone time speeds up your recovery time and recharges you with calm, positive energy.
Reiki Tip: Lay down. Connect with Reiki. Chant the Reiki Principles as a mantra. Scan your body with your hands. Notice any sensations as you move your hands slowly, a few inches above your skin. When sensations get stronger over a certain area, stop and place your hands on that area. Use the Harmony and Power Reiki symbols to balance those chakra areas.
Reiki can break down negative energy your energetic field absorbs from other people.
Have you ever walked into a room and sensed someone with a weird vibe before even speaking to them? Your energy field may have overlapped with theirs. Thoughts, feelings, and experiences (including the hard ones) stay attached to this invisible electromagnetic field around our bodies. Empaths may take on this energy when their sensitive energy field overlaps with another person.
Treating yourself with Reiki for 15 minutes in the morning creates an automatic shield of protection around you. You will be less prone to taking on energy from the other person’s energy field. If you absorb some of their energy, a quick 5-minute Reiki treatment breaks down the unwanted energy and anchors you back into your energy.
Reiki Tip: Did you feel a weird vibe after meeting someone? Connect with Reiki. Place your hands on your heart. Make yourself a vessel for the divine Reiki light to flow through you. Use the Harmony Reiki symbol to clear and purify yourself and the Power Reiki symbol to anchor and recharge. Brush down your energy field with the Reiki at the end of your practice. You are back in balance.
Clearing your space from unwanted energy is vital. Reiki can help you clear, recharge, and replenish any space with positive energy.
Empaths are sensitive not only to people’s energy, but also to the energy of their environment. Reiki can turn any house or apartment into a home that is your sanctuary. Many people aren’t aware of the energy of the space they’re in, but empaths feel it vividly. Anytime you enter a space, your car, office, hotel room, bus, or plane, it is an opportunity to create a supportive environment for yourself through Reiki.
Reiki Tip: Use the Harmony symbol to clear the energy of your space and the Power symbol to charge it with positive energy. “Draw” the symbols on the walls with a smoke clearing stick, like sage or palo santo, or beam the energy to the space with your hands. If you are in a public space, visualize the Reiki symbols, chant the Reiki mantras under your breath, place your hands on your lap, and allow the Reiki to flow-no one will even notice.
Developing your intuition and embracing your empathic gifts is natural with Reiki.
Empaths and HSPs bring the gifts of sensitivity, creativity, compassion, imagination, empathy, and intuition to the world.
You can easily feel disempowered and overwhelmed by all the “noise” around you, but your intuition is naturally strong and ready to guide you. Your inner voice, that little voice inside you, will offer clarity and direction if you listen. Intuition is a skill that can be developed. I talk more about developing your intuition in this blog.
Treating yourself with Reiki quiets all the external noise and connects you with your intuition.
