At the time, I didn’t realize that I was an empath — someone naturally attuned to absorbing the emotions and energies of others. Without the tools to manage this sensitivity, I became a disempowered empath, overwhelmed by the emotional currents around me.

Everything changed in 1996 when a simple ad in a local magazine led me to my first Reiki class. That day marked the beginning of my healing journey — one that would not only restore my energy, but empower me to live and serve others from a place of strength, not depletion.

While showering, place your hands in a comfortable position on your body. Ask the Reiki to cleanse you on the inside while the water washes you on the outside.

Lie down and connect with Reiki. Chant the Reiki Principles softly like a mantra. Slowly scan your body with your hands, hovering a few inches above your skin. If you feel stronger sensations in a certain area, pause and place your hands there. Use the Harmony and Power Reiki symbols to balance the energy and restore flow.

If you’ve ever entered a room and instantly felt “off” — even before anyone said a word — your sensitive energy field may have picked up on lingering emotional residue. As empaths, we often absorb energy from others simply by being near them.
