What is Reiki?
A gentle introduction to Reiki, energy healing, and personal transformation.
Maybe you’ve heard of Reiki through a friend, a wellness podcast, or a moment of late-night Googling. And maybe something about it caught your attention — even if you’re not sure why. You just know you’re ready to feel more grounded, more connected, and more at peace with yourself.
Reiki is a gentle yet powerful practice that helps people reduce stress, reconnect with their intuition, and awaken their natural ability to heal. It’s not a religion or a belief system — it’s an experience. One that invites calm, presence, and deep restoration.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through what Reiki is, where it comes from, and how it might support you on your healing journey — no special background or belief required.

The Origins of Reiki
Reiki began in Japan in the early 1900s, through the teachings of Mikao Usui, a spiritual seeker who dedicated his life to understanding healing and human nature. After a profound meditation experience on Mount Kurama, Usui developed what we now call Usui Reiki Ryoho — the original form of Reiki.
From there, Reiki was passed down through a lineage of teachers, preserving its integrity while adapting to the needs of each generation. In the decades that followed, Reiki made its way to the West and began quietly transforming lives all over the world.
Today, Reiki is practiced in hospitals, homes, and healing spaces alike — not as a trend, but as a timeless method for inner balance and energetic harmony. Whether you’ve heard about Reiki from a friend, a therapist, or a moment of synchronicity, you’re now connected to a path that has supported countless people before you.

How Reiki Works
At its heart, Reiki is about energy — the same universal life force that flows through every living being. When that energy is balanced and flowing freely, we feel grounded, clear, and healthy. But when it’s blocked or depleted, we may feel anxious, disconnected, or physically unwell.
Reiki gently supports the body’s natural healing processes by helping to restore energetic balance. A practitioner places their hands lightly on or above the body, allowing Reiki energy to flow where it’s needed most. There’s no massage, no manipulation — just calm presence and intuitive connection.
Many people describe the experience of receiving Reiki as deeply peaceful. You might feel warmth, tingling, emotional release, or simply a sense of stillness. Some fall asleep. Others cry. Everyone experiences it differently — and that’s part of the beauty.
Reiki isn’t about doing — it’s about allowing. Allowing the body to rest. The mind to quiet. The spirit to reconnect.
“I wish I had known about Reiki years ago. It helped my chronic pain immensely and gave me the spiritual connection I was missing.
Before starting Reiki, I meditated often, trying to feel spiritually aligned — but something was missing. I was also dealing with chronic hip and back pain from old running injuries.
Adding Reiki to my daily meditation helped ease the pain and gave me the deep, fulfilling connection to universal energy I had been seeking. I recently became a certified Reiki Master — and I now use Reiki daily to center myself and reconnect.”
What Reiki Is Not
As Reiki has become more well-known, so have the misconceptions. Let’s gently clear a few of them up.
- Reiki is not a religion. You don’t need to believe in anything to receive or practice Reiki. It works whether you consider yourself spiritual, skeptical, or somewhere in between. Reiki meets you where you are.
- Reiki is not a medical treatment. It’s a complementary practice, not a replacement for medical care. Many people use it alongside other therapies to support emotional well-being, stress reduction, and personal healing.
- Reiki is not about being “gifted.” You don’t need special powers or intuitive abilities to learn Reiki. It’s about openness, intention, and allowing energy to flow.
- Reiki is not only for treating others. One of the biggest misconceptions is that learning Reiki is just for helping other people. The truth is, the greatest gift of Reiki is self-treatment. When you learn Reiki, you receive the ability to give yourself daily healing, balance, and support. That’s where the deepest transformation begins.

Ways to Benefit from Reiki
There are two primary ways to experience the healing power of Reiki:
- Receiving a treatment
Whether in person or from a distance, receiving Reiki is a beautiful way to relax, restore, and allow your body, mind, and spirit to receive what they need. It’s a gentle moment of surrender—an invitation to slow down and be supported on all levels. - Treating yourself
This is where Reiki becomes a way of life. When you learn Reiki and begin giving yourself regular—ideally daily—treatments, you activate and maintain a steady flow of healing energy. You’re not trying to fix yourself. You’re nurturing your body with the energy it naturally understands—energy that supports healing, balance, and renewal from within.
While receiving Reiki from others can be deeply restorative, the real depth of transformation begins when you commit to your own self-treatment practice.
This is when Reiki becomes more than something you receive—it becomes something you live.
Who Can Benefit from Reiki?
Reiki is for anyone seeking a moment of peace in a noisy world. It’s for those carrying stress, emotional heaviness, or a quiet feeling that something is “off.” It’s for the helpers who give too much, the empaths who feel everything, and the busy minds who struggle to rest.
Reiki can support you in times of burnout, transition, grief, or growth. It doesn’t diagnose or fix — it simply creates space for your own healing intelligence to rise to the surface.
Whether you’re navigating a life challenge or simply longing to reconnect with yourself, Reiki offers a soft landing.

Can I Learn Reiki?
One of the most common questions I hear from beginners is:
“Is Reiki something I can actually learn?”
The answer is a clear and heartfelt yes.
You don’t need to be spiritual, intuitive, or energy-sensitive to begin. Reiki isn’t a talent — it’s a practice. When you receive an attunement from a Reiki teacher, you’re connected to the ability to channel Reiki energy. That connection is available to everyone.
In fact, some of the most powerful transformations I’ve witnessed have come from students who never imagined themselves learning anything like this. They came with questions and doubt — and left with clarity and calm.
