The unhappy dog

By Michal Spiegelman

Let me tell you a story.

There was a dog that was always restless. He couldn’t stay in one place for more than a few minutes. When he was outside, it was too hot for him; under a bush he was itchy. Inside the house he was bored and always moving from one place to another. Every little thing bothered him.

The owner really cared about the dog and tried to make him more comfortable. He placed the dog’s bed in a different room, got the dog a new crate, and eventually even moved to a new house to make the dog happy. The dog was still restless.

Do you know what the dog’s problem was?

The dog had fleas.

People have fleas, too.

Just like the unhappy dog in the story, we often complain about the things that bug us. A particular person rubs us the wrong way. Our jobs stress us out. We find fault with our families, our neighbors, or our friends. But the real problem is-our fleas.

Do you ever think that if you only?

  • moved to a new house
  • changed your job
  • found the love of your life
  • (Should I go on?!)

-you would be happy?

So what’s the solution? To make changes in your life and hope the fleas will just go away on their own? To alter your environment, your relationships, or your career, and hope the fleas won’t follow?

Of course not! Sometimes, our fleas have been with us so long, we don’t even realize how uncomfortable we are. That restlessness and unhappiness becomes our comfort zone. We use our fleas to keep ourselves small, to give ourselves permission to shrink away rather than move forward, to allow ourselves to hide in the back.

Rest assured, you’re not the only one with fleas. Other people have them. So do businesses. Those fleas can affect you too. Years ago, I had plenty of fleas too!

But as with the dog in the story, the solution is simpler than we think. We can make all the changes in the world to try to make our lives “better,” but if we do nothing to change our perspective, we will always find ourselves back where we started.

So what are you going to do, beloved? Are you prepared to give yourself the radical self-care you deserve? Do you think it’s time to get rid of your fleas?

If you’re not sure if you’re ready to stop endlessly scratching at your itch without getting to the source of what’s causing it, send me a note, and let’s talk! I can help you decide if now is the right time for you.

Sometimes discomfort is our comfort zone, beloved. Feeling anything but restless and unhappy may seem scary and impossible. It’s not. Give yourself the gift of freedom, lightness, and joy.

I can’t wait to help you get rid of those fleas!

Sometimes guilt is good

Have you ever heard of healthy guilt? Unhealthy guilt is toxic, but healthy guilt is a spiritual practice that helps us to recognize which of our values is taking priority. A “lazy” morning watching tv recently put my sense of both to the test.
