“A family, like a canoe, must be steered or paddled, or it won’t take you where you want to go.” –?— William J. Doherty

What are some of the best memories from your childhood? How many of those memories were created around family rituals such as holidays, family meals and family vacations?

According to Dr. Doherty, family rituals give us predictability, connection, identity and a way to enact values. Doherty recommends, as the first step, creating more intentional family meals. Although he shares very clear guidelines he also recommends taking into consideration the children’s ages and determining what you already enjoy doing as a family.

William J. Doherty, Ph.D., is one of the leading family therapists in the country. He is a practicing therapist and Director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota. He lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.

His many years of experience as a therapist are translated into simple tips that can be easily modified by each family.

One of my favorite sections of the book is the one about Couples Rituals. Dr. Doherty explains exactly why and how to create a 14-minute daily talk ritual to connect and share. He also talks about the importance of planning a ?date night? every other week. My husband and I have used both rituals for years and it helps us deepen our connection after 25 years of marriage.

The last chapter of the book, ?Becoming a More Intentional Family? makes it all easy by offering specific strategies for working with rituals in order to become and intentional family.

Sometimes guilt is good

Have you ever heard of healthy guilt? Unhealthy guilt is toxic, but healthy guilt is a spiritual practice that helps us to recognize which of our values is taking priority. A “lazy” morning watching tv recently put my sense of both to the test.

If you?re traveling to another country, take some local currency. In some places, it can be difficult to get your money exchanged outside of regular business hours. You can go to any large bank and exchange foreign currency before you go to the airport.
