Every day, you make about 5,000 decisions. Over a lifetime, thatâs 5 trillion.
From small daily choices to life-changing ones, most people try to think their way through decisions. They analyze. Plan. Make pros and cons lists. And stillâthey doubt. They regret. They obsess.
Research confirms what I see every day in my work: mental intelligence is the dominant driver in how people make decisions.
But thinking alone doesnât always create clarity.
When I look back at some of the biggest decisions Iâve made in my adult life, I realize it wasnât logic that led meâit was something deeper.
There were moments when my mind said, âNoâthis isnât practical.â But my body, my heart, and my Soul whispered, âYes.â
Like when my husband and I became empty nesters and decided to start a new adventure in New York, if we had sat down and crunched the numbers, we probably wouldnât have movedâbecause yes, life in NYC is expensive.
But we listened to a quiet voice inside that guided us to initiate this transition and fill our lives with culture, new experiences, and the excitement of starting over in a new place.
For seven years, we lived in a cute Brooklyn apartment that filled us with creativity, joy, and inspiration. Museums. Parks. Diversity. Energy.
Then, out of nowhere, I felt a quiet inner nudgeâa whisper from my Soul. I found the courage to share it with my husband. Four months later, we were back in Atlantaâwithout ever planning to leave.
It wasnât always like that
Growing up, I was more inclined to do the right thing, please others, or make the expected choice. Listening to my intuition wasnât something my parents encouraged.
I was always intuitive, but it wasnât until I started practicing Reikiâand eventually became a Reiki Masterâthat something opened up. My intuition came alive.
Fast forwardâŠ
Thatâs how decision-making has looked for me again and againâwhether itâs been about a move, a career step, or even choosing the right kind of vacation.
Itâs never just been about logic.
In my book Becoming Soulful, I wrote:
âEach of us possesses a natural Inner Wisdom, a guiding voice that is as constant as the beating of our hearts. It is a timeless navigator, whispering insights collected not from books or lectures but from the very essence of our being. This wisdom is not loud or demanding. It requires us to seek silence, be still, and listen.â
When I began to include my body, emotions, and intuitionâalongside my logical mindâthatâs when decision-making became something deeper. A fuller kind of clarity began to emerge.
This way of deciding didnât stay personal
While writing this blog, I paused to jump on Zoom for a coaching session with a long-time client. Iâve supported her for yearsâthrough the ups and downs of an unhealthy relationship, and later, through the courage it took to file for divorce.
In todayâs session, she shared something big: she had just made the decision to buy a house. A home that would become her sacred spaceâone that holds no memories of the complicated dynamic she had with her ex.
Her adult kids think sheâs out of her mind. They say she made a quick, impulsive decision.
But hereâs what I sawâand of course I shared it with her, because Iâm always direct: the decision wasnât impulsive at all. She had been receiving signals from the universe for weeks. And she trusted them.
She made that decision quickly because sheâs practiced at this. She knows how to listenânot just to her thoughts, but to her body, her heart, and her inner voice.
Over time, Full Compass Decision-Making became more than a process I used for myself.
It became the way I guide others.
Not everyone calls it intuition or soul. Some just say, âI feel torn.â âMy head says one thing, but something else is pulling me.â They donât need more thinking. They need a different kind of clarity.
So together, we pause. Using a brilliant decision-making process I developed, Â listen inward. We let the full compass speakâmind, body, heart, and intuition.
Again and again, Iâve seen what happens when people make decisions from that place: They stop doubting. They start trusting. And they move forward with a kind of quiet certainty that holds.
Your inner compass is made up of four kinds of intelligence.
Most people rely on one. But when all four are included, something shifts.
Clarity deepens. Trust strengthens. And the next step becomes unmistakably clear.
Hereâs how each one speaks:
- Mental Intelligence offers logic, information, analysis, and planning.
- Somatic Intelligence speaks through the bodyâtension, energy, or ease.
- Emotional Intelligence brings awareness of what matters to your heart.
- Intuitive Intelligence delivers inner knowing, often before words appear.
When these four align, a fifth kind of clarity emergesâ
Spiritual Intelligence: the deep, grounded nowing that doesnât need second-guessing.
For some, this deeper knowing feels like a connection with the Divine-God, Source, or a higher power beyond ourselves. In Becoming Soulful, I describe spirituality as any relationship or practice that connects us with something greater.
For some, that might be through an established faith or religious tradition. For others, it may take shape in a personal, non-religious way-through nature, service, meditation, or daily acts of love and presence.
However we name it or practice it, this connection expands our perspective, reminding us that we are part of something larger and profoundly wise. When I use this model to help people make decisions, thereâs always a moment when we pause to recognize the spiritual lesson or opportunity held within the situation.
Every decision carries an invitationânot just to choose a direction, but to grow in faith, awareness, and alignment with the deeper wisdom guiding us.
Thereâs a hidden cost to staying undecided.
The longer a decision lingers, the more it drains you.
Even if youâre not talking about it, your body carries the tension. Your mind loops through possibilities. Your energy gets scattered. And the longer you stay in limbo, the heavier it feels to move at all.
Look back at your life.
Do you remember a time when it took you too long to decide?
Maybe you kept pushing it off, waiting for the âperfectâ clarity that never came.
How much energy did that delay take from you?
Sometimes, the hardest part isnât the decision itselfâitâs the weight of not deciding.
Letâs pause, where is your Soul asking you to choose?
Pause for a moment.
Close your eyes if youâd like.
Where in your life are you standing at a fork in the road?
Let the answer rise from withinânot from your to-do list, but from your deeper knowing. You donât have to map it all out yet.
Just begin by noticing where your energy is being pulledâand what your Soul might be asking you to pay attention to.
Is there a decision weighing on youâabout your career, a relationship, your living situation, or your health and well-being?
What becomes possible once the decision is made?
Ready for deeper clarity?
You donât have to stay in the swirl.
