I woke up in the middle of the night and immediately reconnected with a sense of anxiety I had felt just before going to bed. Yes, I know! It’s not very smart to go to bed anxious. No wonder I was still anxious hours later. But my daughter had shared news earlier that night that had triggered my protective motherly instincts. I worried about her all night and rose tired and restless the next day.
When I told my husband about my sleepless night, he looked at me with wide eyes that I knew to mean, ?Why waste a good night’s sleep with unnecessary worry?? I could see that he really didn’t understand.
There are times when my husband?s ability to keep things in perspective is exactly what I need, and there are times when it’s not enough. (And it has taken a lot of work over the years for me to stop trying to change him and accept the gift of his ability to detach!)
In fact, research suggests that men and women tend to differ in their responses to stress. Women more often seek out social support in a pattern social psychologist Dr. Shelley E. Taylor calls ?tend and befriend.? We respond to stress by protecting (or ?tending?) our young and by seeking social contact with (or ?befriending?) others. The trend occurs not just in human women but in females across many species.
So, accepting that my husband really couldn’t ?get it,? I reached out to a group of women who think like me, feel like me, and, just like me, have moments of extreme worry?my Soul Tribe. I got exactly the kind of validation I needed:
?OMG, I would stay awake all night if I were you!?
?Seriously? And you are being hard on yourself for THAT? You’re just a normal mother.?
?So what if she’s 24? She’s still your baby and always will be!?
?Welcome to the club! Do you know how many times it has happened to me??
(By the way, my 24-year-old ?baby? is totally fine! Of course I overreacted. Isn’t overreacting part of my job description as a mother?)
Beloved, women need a Soul Tribe.
We heal in community.
We need one another.
We need to connect. To belong.
Finding your Soul Tribe is part of your spiritual journey.
Spirituality is about tapping into a bigger purpose and believing in a power greater than ourselves. It is part of our spiritual journey to deepen our connection to and maintain an alignment with this greater power. Connecting with one another is also part of that journey because healing doesn’t happen in isolation.
When we heal ourselves, we heal the world.
I gave it a lot of thought before coming up with this phrase that is part of the Beacons of Change Manifesto: We believe that healing together outshines healing alone.
Finding your Soul Tribe means finding a sisterhood with which you can share your struggles and pain without risking judgment or criticism.
Finding your Soul Tribe means feeling safe, heard, seen, accepted, and hugged.
When you feel that way’safe, heard, seen, accepted, and hugged?you make a difference in the world. You do your part. When the world around us is so intense, that’s the most important thing we can do: our part.
Beloved, I want you to lean in close because this message comes from the deepest essence of my soul.
We need YOU!
We?a sisterhood of women who recognize the importance of having a Soul Tribe.
We?the Beacons of Change Inner Circle community?who live by a shared set of values.
We?the women who are dedicated to giving and receiving the support and encouragement necessary to step into our full power so that we can live free, light, and fulfilled.
We need you to join us on this important mission.
We need you to help us do our part. Because by doing our part, we change the world.
We need you to take a deep purifying breath, a sigh of relief, and say, from a heart-centered place: I HAVE FOUND MY SOUL TRIBE!
Many years of working with women has brought me to this point in time, and I am looking forward to taking you under my wing and serving as your beacon?as your guide and your source of light’so that you can do the same: become the beacon you are meant to be.
Remember, healing together outshines healing alone.
You have found your Soul Tribe.
