My Top 10 Immediate Stress Relaxers

Everyone feels stressed out from time to time. Unfortunately, daily events lead to small amounts of stress that can escalate quickly if you do not learn to manage it quickly. I often recommend the following 10 stress relaxers to manage stress to my clients so they can handle stress as it happens rather than wait for it to get out of control.

1 – Catch Stress Early

You need to learn the ways in which your body responds to stress physically in order to fully catch it and decrease stress before it becomes a problem. Some things to watch out for include clenched teeth, a rapid heartbeat, quick breathing, shaking, small stress headaches and more.

2 – Reward Yourself for Catching the Stress

If you catch these early signs of stress, don’t panic! This can make your stress worse when the point is to manage stress to the point that it is no longer a concern. Instead, reward yourself if you can catch these early stress signs. Don’t reward yourself with in a way that will hurt you like eating sugar or drinking wine. Reward yourself with something that gives you a break and make you feel at peace, like: taking deep breathes, smile, tell yourself: ?I love you?, raise your arms and sing.

3 – Repeat this Mantra:

“What I feel now is stress, and stress is what it is.” You should repeat this to yourself 30 times in succession. It may seem like overkill, but it will help your body and your mind work together to understand your symptoms. It will also help you detach yourself from the situation at hand and focus on the moment.

4 – Shift Your Energy with Breathing

You can do this at the same time that you are repeating the above mantra to yourself. You should inhale deeply and exhale at least 10 times while focusing on positive things to manage stress before it overwhelms you. If you do not feel better after 10 breaths, keep going. There is no time limit.

5 – Change Your Posture

Even subtle changes in the way that your body is positioned can help you manage stress and feel better overall. By changing your posture for only two minutes and correcting things such as hunching, you can completely change the way you handle stress. Amy Cuddy, a renowned social psychologist, recommends ?power posing?, or the act of exuding confidence through posture.

6 – Write about Your Stress

If there is something that is bothering you, keeping you awake at night, keeping you from focusing on the task at hand or even interfering with every aspect of your daily life, keeping a journal can help you clear these thoughts from your mind. However, you will need to back this up with something for which you are grateful in order to counteract that stress. This technique recommends making a bullet list of everything and anything that stresses you out.

7 – Put Life on Pause

One of the best ways to immediately manage stress involves simply putting everything on pause for five minutes and working to remove your mind of any thought at all. This may be a great opportunity to use some mini-meditation methods to simply help you relax and detach yourself from the moment.

8 – Try Guided Visualizations

Trying guided visualizations for five to 15 minutes can be incredibly relaxing, and these can be found in various sources across the internet. Some of these are designed for relaxation, others are designed for managing stress, and still others are designed to help you get the things you want in life. Go beyond generically removing stress from your life and focus on the situation that is causing the stress in the first place when you use this technique.

9 – Talk to a Friend

Sometimes, the absolute best way to manage stress involves simply talking to someone you love and trust. A quick 10-minute telephone call or even a short visit may be all you need to disengage and change your entire frame of mind. After all, it is true that laughter is often the best medicine.

10 – Flush the Stress

Flushing the stress from your body can be thought of in a physical sense, too. Things like going swimming, soaking in a hot tub, taking a shower or even drinking a refreshing glass of water can be great ways to manage stress. As you do so, be sure to think of the water as flushing the stress from your body. You can also combine this with the other techniques listed here.

When it comes to taking care of yourself and getting what you want out of life, you have to be able to manage stress. The 10 stress relaxers above are tried-and-true, and they are guaranteed to help you recognize stress and stop it before it seriously affects your life.
