Who was Mikao Usui?
Reiki’s founder, teacher, and seeker — the story of Mikao Usui, his teachings, and his legacy.
If you’ve ever experienced Reiki or felt drawn to learn it, you’ve already been touched by the legacy of Usui Mikao.
As the founder of Usui Reiki Ryōhō, the system of natural healing we now simply call “Reiki,” Usui’s life has shaped the journeys of millions. Yet for many students, he remains a mysterious figure — one spoken of with reverence but often understood only in fragments.
Who was this man behind the energy? What inspired his search for healing? And what can we learn from his life as modern Reiki students and teachers?
Thanks to recent historical discoveries — including handwritten documents and official records now publicly available — Usui’s story is becoming clearer. And what’s emerging is a portrait of a lifelong seeker, dedicated educator, and compassionate healer whose teachings continue to ripple across the world.
The Man Behind the Practice
Born in 1865 in the village of Taniai, Japan, Usui Mikao came from a family of samurai ancestry. He was a man of deep curiosity and wide-ranging interests — studying everything from classical Chinese literature and psychology to Christianity, Buddhism, and folk medicine.
Contrary to the myth of a single spiritual awakening, Usui’s life was a tapestry of study, service, and spiritual exploration. He lived through times of rapid change in Japan, and his work reflected a synthesis of East and West, tradition and innovation, intellect and intuition.
He wasn’t building a religion. He was cultivating a method for self-healing, compassion, and personal growth — a path that honored each individual’s ability to restore balance and wholeness from within.
His students memorialized him as “a man of great learning, virtue, and compassion,” a reflection of the inscription on the stele placed at his gravesite in 1927 by the Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai:
New Insights from Historical Research
Until recently, much of what we knew about Usui came from oral tradition and memorial inscriptions. But in 2024, a breakthrough changed everything.
According to Reiki researcher Justin B. Stein, researcher Min Wang uncovered original documents in Taiwan’s national archives — including a handwritten CV by Usui himself. These records confirm and expand on Usui’s work history, education, and values.
Among the discoveries:
- Usui studied psychology under Dr. Motora Yūjirō, one of Japan’s first experimental psychologists.
- He worked with Gotō Shinpei, a key figure in Japan’s modernization, and conducted research on local customs in Taiwan.
- He spent time in the United States working with Christian missionary organizations, helping to establish schools in underserved neighborhoods of Tokyo.
These findings confirm Usui’s deep commitment to education, service, and cross-cultural learning — all of which influenced the compassionate, inclusive spirit of the Reiki system.
Full citations for these findings will be added soon.
Why this History Matters for Reiki Students Today
Why should modern Reiki students care about these historical details?
Because understanding where Reiki comes from deepens how we practice it. When we see Usui not as a mythic figure, but as a human being — someone who faced hardship, sought knowledge, and created from the heart — we feel more connected to the lineage we’re part of.
His story reminds us:
- Reiki is not rigid. It’s adaptive, experiential, and personal.
- There is no “perfect path” — just honest practice, grounded in presence.
- Energy healing belongs to everyone. Like Usui, we each bring our own background, questions, and gifts to the journey.
For students coming from a religious background, this history also helps explain how Reiki and Christianity can work together — in a way that honors both tradition and personal healing.
Usui’s Core Teachings
At the heart of Usui’s system was a clear, simple idea: healing begins within. He taught that everyone has access to this inner power — and that it can be nurtured through daily practice, mindful living, and a compassionate heart.
His original teachings emphasized:
- Self-practice: Using the hands to direct energy and calm the nervous system
- Meditation & breathwork: Anchoring into presence
- Reiju (attunement): A sacred initiation that awakens one’s ability to channel Reiki
- The Five Principles (Gokai): A code of daily living to bring energy and intention into alignment
These teachings weren’t designed to make people healers. They were meant to help people come home to themselves — to live with more kindness, clarity, and awareness.
Honoring the Lineage
The original form of Reiki taught by Usui included:
- Reiju (attunement): A spiritual initiation passed from teacher to student
- Self-practice: Regular hand placements for energy balancing
- The Five Reiki Principles (Gokai): A daily code of mindful living

“Just for today, do not worry.
Do not anger.
Be grateful.
Work diligently.
Be kind to others.”
— Usui Mikao
Learning Reiki isn’t just about technique. It’s about joining a living lineage — one that began with a seeker on Mt. Kurama, and continues every time someone places their hands on their heart with the intention to heal.
