Let’s say you wake up in the morning fully energized after a good night’s sleep. You start your day on a positive note, feeling good. Your vitality level is high.
Then, a series of things may happen:
- You check your phone first thing, and a stressful email or news headline immediately shifts your mood.
- A conversation with a loved one leaves you feeling frustrated or emotionally drained.
- You sit at your desk all day, barely moving, forgetting to breathe deeply.
- The to-do list keeps growing, and no matter how much you check off, it never feels like enough.
- You spend your day taking care of everyone else’s needs, with no time left for yourself.
Or maybe it’s something bigger—navigating uncertainty, carrying emotional burdens, or dealing with a major life transition. That’s life, right?
There is a cost to living with constant demands, stress, overstimulation, and uncertainty.
The result?
We leak life force energy—leaving us exhausted, disconnected, and out of sync with our natural flow.
We need a way to recharge our internal battery and restore the flow of ki—the vital life force energy that Reiki practitioners view as essential to spiritual, physical, and emotional balance.
But what if, on top of all this, you’re dealing with a physical or emotional imbalance—chronic pain, anxiety, depression, or deep grief? The energy drain becomes even greater.
That’s why having a daily practice to replenish your energy is essential.
It’s something I didn’t know years ago when I was carrying a lot of grief from the pregnancies I lost. I was heartbroken and depressed, yet I kept going through the motions of life, unaware that my energy was depleted. I didn’t realize that I needed a way to heal, to restore myself, to reconnect with something greater.
That’s when Reiki found me. And it changed everything.
My Unexpected Reiki Story
My love story with Reiki began on an ordinary Friday afternoon as I casually flipped through a local magazine in Israel. I saw an advertisement for a meditation weekend retreat. Unknowingly, my Soul was seeking comfort, and my intuition immediately urged me to attend.
Little did I know that during this getaway weekend, I would meet a spiritual mentor who would later become my Reiki master.
With no prior knowledge of Reiki or meditation, I dove into the retreat experience. Just three weeks later, I found myself participating in a Level 1 Reiki class, experiencing the energy attunement process—a spiritual initiation that opens the energy channels to receive universal life force.
During the class, as my Reiki Master guided me through the attunement, I experienced an opening in my heart and a sense of lightness unlike anything I had ever felt.
Between raising two children, maintaining my job, and fulfilling my duties as a wife, mother, daughter, and business owner, I lacked real happiness. I was battling to get past my depression and cope with the sorrow of losing six out of my eight pregnancies.
Within a few weeks of practicing daily Reiki self-treatment, the heavy burden of grief lifted, and joy began to return.
What surprised me most was that Reiki didn’t erase my grief and depression—it changed my relationship with them. It made space for complex emotional states—what some might call emotional transmutation—without bypassing the pain.
Years of therapy helped me process. But Reiki helped me feel.
It became my spiritual anchor. And even after I completed my Reiki Master training, I didn’t plan to teach. But it was Reiki’s plan.
Fast forward to today—thousands have gone through my training, with many becoming Reiki Masters themselves.
If you work in wellness or healthcare and are exploring how to integrate energy work into your practice, you might find these seven reasons Reiki benefits professionals helpful.
And if you’re navigating emotional stress or inner tension, here’s how Reiki helps restore peace and emotional balance through gentle daily practice.
What Is Reiki?
The word Reiki comes from Japanese, combining two kanji characters:
- “Rei” – referring to spirit, Soul, or a divine, universal intelligence
- “Ki” – meaning life energy, the same vital force known as chi in Chinese medicine or prana in yogic traditions
Together, Reiki can be understood as spiritually guided life force energy—the unseen essence that flows through and connects all living things.
Most people are introduced to Reiki as a hands-on healing modality, where gentle touch or hovering hands are used to balance energy. But Reiki is more than a healing technique—it’s a spiritual discipline and energetic alignment tool.
There are two main ways to experience Reiki:
- Receiving Reiki: from a practitioner, either in person or via distance healing
- Practicing Reiki: learning to channel Reiki energy for self-treatment, emotional balance, and daily support
While Reiki is often used in casual settings with family and friends, it’s also practiced professionally in spas, clinics, wellness centers, and even hospitals—where it’s valued for its calming, restorative effects.
At its core, Reiki is a pathway for connecting with universal energy, restoring your natural flow, and supporting healing on every level—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
It’s not just something you receive. It’s something you learn to live and embody.
Exploring the Depths of Reiki
Reiki is a holistic energy healing method that supports the well-being of body, mind, and spirit. It works through gentle touch—or even energetic proximity—combined with breath, intention, and visualization.
This isn’t something a person learns purely through theory. Rather, Reiki is awakened through a spiritual attunement (sometimes called an initiation or blessing) from a qualified Reiki Master. That attunement opens the flow of ki, or life force energy, and the practice deepens over time through regular self-treatment and hands-on sessions.
Reiki is completely non-invasive and always functions for the individual’s highest good. Even when results aren’t immediately visible, the subtle harmonization of energy fields can create deep shifts over time. Reiki often addresses root causes rather than just symptoms—leading to sustained well-being and energetic balance.
It’s important to know that Reiki practitioners don’t use their personal power to heal. They are not the source of the energy—they are clear channels, allowing universal life force energy to move through them. The energy itself guides the process, attuning to the recipient’s unique body, mind, and spiritual needs.
While Reiki draws from Japanese spiritual traditions, it’s not a religion and doesn’t require any particular belief system. It’s often described as a Self-Provided Non-Religious (SPNR) practice—similar to meditation or yoga. Whether you identify as spiritual, religious, or neither, Reiki meets you where you are.
If you’re someone with Christian roots wondering how Reiki fits with faith, read how one of my students found deeper connection to God through Reiki.
Reiki is taught progressively, with levels of initiation that build your skill. Advanced students learn sacred symbols and distant healing techniques to expand their energetic reach.
At every level, students are introduced to Reiki’s Five Precepts (Gokai)—spiritual principles that form the ethical heart of the practice. These ideals aren’t rules—they’re invitations for self-reflection, energetic clarity, and conscious living.
Living the Reiki Way
The Five Reiki Principles, also known as the Gokai or Reiki Precepts, offer more than just spiritual insight—they provide a daily framework for emotional clarity, mindful presence, and inner peace.
There are various translations of the Reiki precepts, and I’m presenting the version that has resonated with me and guided my practice since 1996.
Just for today, do not anger.
Just for today, do not worry.
Honor your teachers, your parents, your neighbors, your friends.
Just for today, live honestly.
Just for today, be kind to all living things.
These principles are both the foundation of the Reiki system and the fruit of daily Reiki practice. What began as a healing technique gradually became a spiritual path—a way of being that I call “living the Reiki way.”
To live the Reiki way means embracing the full range of human emotion—acknowledging anger, worry, grief, and confusion—without suppressing or bypassing them. It means creating space for inner work. When we hold onto unprocessed emotional energy, it can eventually manifest in the physical body.
That’s where the power of “Just for today…” comes in. This phrase isn’t just poetic—it reflects the Japanese Zen principle of impermanence and the Meiji-era emphasis on daily renewal. It invites us to start fresh each morning with intentional awareness, rather than striving for perfection.
While the original language of the precepts may sound like prohibitions (“do not…”), they are in truth gentle encouragements—nudging us toward self-compassion, kindness, and presence.
If written today, with our modern understanding of language and psychology, they might read more like:
Choose peace over anger.
Choose trust over worry.
Choose reverence.
Choose honesty.
Choose kindness.
Still, the traditional phrasing carries a timeless simplicity—reminding us that, no matter what happened yesterday, we always begin again just for today.
