Anxiety is a gift. Welcome it.

What do you think about that?

No matter how your anxiety manifests, it serves a purpose. That doesn’t mean that it’s fun or comfortable. But when you accept your anxiety with love and try to understand its gifts, you can manage it better.

Can you simply decide to stop being anxious?

Maybe your anxiety is rooted in past trauma that is stored in your body and causes panic or a jumpy reaction every time you are triggered.

Can you change the fact that you were traumatized? No.

Maybe you adopted anxiety-related behaviors from your parents, teachers, or society.

Can you change the fact that you learned to be anxious? No.

So what CAN you change?

You can change the amount of power, attention, emotion, and energy you devote to your anxiety.

I’ve shared my story of anxiety and depression here often. I’ve also shared the stories of many other women. That’s because I’ve seen miracles happen when each of us opened ourselves to a series of practices I’ve come to call the Beacons of Change method. That doesn’t mean we don’t sometimes use other tools—medications, therapy, breathing techniques, or other modalities. For me, the other piece of the puzzle has always been Reiki.

The Beacons of Change approach to anxiety

You are a beacon. You have the ability to connect to your inner light and to bring in divine light at every single moment. This truth about yourself is key to remember when you are dealing with your anxiety.

Whatever you focus on grows.

Instead of giving energy and attention to your anxiety, choose instead to tap into the light. You will uplift yourself energetically, and from that elevated place, your intuition will come alive, insight will flow, and solutions will emerge.

Are you with me, beloved?

First, say “THANK YOU!”

Next time you feel your anxiety growing, pause as early as you can and say, “Anxiety, we’re going to try something new today. I’m going to thank you!”

Anxiety is a messenger. Acknowledge what it is trying to tell you: Something is off. Something needs your attention.”

Then, bring CURIOSITY to the process and say to yourself, “Interesting! I wonder what’s going on this time?”

Now you can use your awareness to identify what triggered it. You can allow yourself to feel it—but not for too long.

Shifting away from anxiety is your choice!

Here is the surprising fact: every single moment is an opportunity to create a turning point. When anxiety doesn’t serve you, you have the power to shift away from it.

For me, this is where Reiki comes in.

Here are 3 effective ways to raise your vibration and deal with anxiety more effectively:

  • Move your body

Anxiety manifests physically in your body: tight muscles, bloat, shortness of breath, insomnia. So you can also embody its release. In other words, any type of exercise or movement (including sex!) will help you shake off anxiety. Give yourself permission to move your body. Movement releases physical tension and activates the hormones that make you feel good. Trust me. It works.

  • Do something you love

Another permission slip: Set the anxiety “aside” and do something you love (even if it’s only for 15 minutes!) Drawing, gardening, writing, knitting—do anything as long as it feeds your soul and sparks your joy. You’ll be amazed how much this simple shift changes the way you feel. Remember: whatever you focus on grows! Laughing, creating, dancing, singing, and being happy invites more of the same from the universe.

  • Give Reiki to yourself
I have given myself Reiki every day since 1996. I do it when I’m lying in bed in the morning, before I fall asleep at night, or when I’m sitting in a waiting room, at the movies, or on the train.

Please believe me that what I’m about to say comes straight from my heart: Learning to give Reiki to yourself might be the best gift you can give yourself.

I teach Reiki in both Atlanta and New York, and people in my Reiki community report that their anxiety has decreased, that they can choose their responses from a centered and grounded place rather than reacting automatically and anxiously when triggered.

Millions of people worldwide practice Reiki. It’s easy. It’s practical. It only takes one day to learn to give it to yourself, and then Reiki becomes a lifetime tool for shifting your own energy. You can use it alone or integrate it with other modalities, such as yoga or meditation. Reiki helps you raise your vibration, and that’s why it is beneficial in a variety of situations, including anxiety.

I hope you will consider taking a class with me. But first, if you’re curious, take a few minutes to learn more about Reiki and how it can help you with your anxiety. I invite you to try my “Introduction to Reiki Video Course.” You can access the Reiki course for free here.
