Coaching tip: Think outside the box

By Michal Spiegelman

So many times people say: ?think outside the box?. Why is it important and how do we do it?

Thinking outside the box means approaching situations in new ways, putting yourself in a position or a state of mind you?d never thought before. It pushes you beyond you limits and connects you to your creativity. It helps you to develop the ability to solve problems in a different way.

Here’s a tip: get a box.

And I mean a real box. It can be any size, any color ? a box and a lid.

In situations where you realize you need help, use the box as a reminder and a motivator to think outside the box. Look at your box and ask yourself questions like:

? In what way am I boxed now?

? What box do I need to get rid of?

? From what box do I need to get out?

? What/who might help me jump outside the box?

? Who in my life is in the box with me?

? What other options do I have?

If you want, you can even put a note inside the box with few questions of your own.

From time to time, change the position and location of the box. Put it upside down or take off the cover or put it in a different location. It will be one more reminder that things in life do change.

Would love to hear your comments: what makes you think outside the box?

Sometimes guilt is good

Have you ever heard of healthy guilt? Unhealthy guilt is toxic, but healthy guilt is a spiritual practice that helps us to recognize which of our values is taking priority. A “lazy” morning watching tv recently put my sense of both to the test.
