Is it even possible to have fun in the holidays? If someone were to write a book describing your holidays, would it be titled ?Getting Things Done this Holiday Season? or ?Having Fun this Holiday Season??
In our world, many people measure their success by how much they ?get done.? and not by how they feel or how much fun they have. During the month of December we get into a mode of ?I have to get all this done by the holidays or else?? We often fall into the new year exhausted and drained because of the amount of pressure we’ve put on ourselves. Even something that can be really fun, like decorating the house, can become a source of stress. I recently heard from a woman how she freaked out when she got her family members to help decorate the house. Stuff was all over, the house was chaotic, and before putting up a single decoration, she was already worrying about the daunting task of taking everything down after the holidays.
Most of us grew up observing and learning from others that having fun is not as important as being productive, accomplishing tasks, and achieving goals. Many people have been programmed to believe that having fun is selfish, and they feel guilty if they allow themselves to simply enjoy life.
If you are one of those people, the holiday season is a great opportunity to challenge your values. Consider moving ?productivity and getting things done? lower on your priority list and making ?fun and enjoyment? your top priority. Just have fun.
When I coach people how to have more fun in life, they often report that an increase in the amount of fun they experience also brings more satisfaction in other areas of life, including productivity and getting things done. Imagine that. You can get things done and have fun at the same time!
To beat holiday stress make FUN a priority. As often as you can, ask yourself the following question: How can I have more fun right now?
