Beating Holiday Stress Tip #1: Change your shoulds to wants

By Michal Spiegelman

The holidays are a busy and stressful time for many people. Holiday Stress is in the air, and it’s contagious! Even if your intention is to fully enjoy the season despite the stress, there is so much to do during the month of December that it can be overwhelming: attending parties, decorating, baking, gift shopping, card sending, and the list goes on?

The last thing you want is to start the new year completely drained; you want to create some Balanced Moments in your life right now ? but how?

To help you feel more joy and less holiday stress, I have created a few short videos where I share FUN and SIMPLE tips that are easy for you to apply.

In the first ?Beating Holiday Stress? video, you and I will have a conversation around changing your shoulds to wants.

When you do something because you have to or you ?should,? or maybe because it is expected of you, it creates negative energy and it might drain you and make you feel stuck. You can easily get unstuck by changing you attitude to a more positive one.

To shift your negative attitude to more positive so you can get to action, do one of the following:

    1. Don’t do your holiday tasks unless you really want to

Scan over your Holiday To-Do list and look for ?should? items. Ask yourself which ones you can delegate to others or simply not do them because you honestly don’t want to.

    1. Change your thinking and energy until you believe that you WANT to do it and then get your holiday tasks done

There may be some items on your list that you end up doing but your current energy around them is one of responsibility and obligation. How can you change your inner-monologue to raise your motivation level? How will you feel after you get it (what is it?) done? Asking those questions will help you change that dreaded feeling of ?should? to an excited feeling of ?want?.

Your Action Step:
Watch the video and then choose one ?should? that you are willing to change to a ?want?. Post your intention here and I will send you positive energy to help you make a small change and start Beating Holiday Stress.

Let’s work together: Post here what you are willing to change from ?should? to ?want?. I?ll go first:
?I will change my attitude around de-cluttering my closet! I do it not because I need to but because I want to. It energizes and uplifts me to walk into a clean, spacious closet

Now it is your turn to post?
What are you willing to change from ?should? to ?want? so you can enjoy the season more?

Let’s beat holiday stress together, sharing our tips, ideas, and positive energy! Let’s approach January 1st with a sense of excitement and motivation for a brand new year.

Wow. I have been working on my Stressors, but I was having trouble seeing past them. After watching your video I was compelled to try again, this time writing them down. First, what was stressing me, then writing them as an “I Want” statements, and then finally changing the “I want”, to “I will” or in one case “There will” – Something about seeing it written down clearly created a shift. THANK YOU!!

Good point, Moira! the process of writing it down helps creating the shift. Depends on your learning style – writing, reading, hearing can help changing your attitude. I just heard from a client who called her cell phone from another phone and recorded her “want to” statement so she can listen to the message often. Personal growth can be really fun! thanks for writing.
