How to be a lighthouse in the midst of the storm

By Michal Spiegelman

We are vulnerable and hurting. In the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are witnessing and taking part in a sea change to end cruel systemic violence and racism toward black people in the U.S. and around the world. 2020 is shaking us to our core.

A relentless storm has rolled in, and it’s not going to stop.

We have an opportunity to create radical change that starts from within, and we all have to do our part.

But that doesn’t mean that our roles are the same.

We want to contribute in ways that align with our values. With our hearts.

What is your role? What is our role as a community?

“Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save;
they just stand there shining.” —Anne Lamott

This is one of my favorite quotes of all time.

If you are a member of our Beacons of Change community, it means that you have accepted your sacred responsibility to be a guide and a source of light for others. You have been divinely preparing for this awakening.

Our role is not simple, but it’s clear.

Your role, my role, our role is to be a lighthouse.

There are 3 things we must do to shine our light during stormy times.

  1. We must root down.
  2. We must rise up.
  3. We must offer a vibration of loving kindness.

Let’s explore these ideas one by one.

Be a lighthouse: Root down.

If you are an empath or a sensitive soul, you are deeply affected by the sadness, grief, anger, and suffering in the world. It’s hard to separate our feelings from those we absorb around us.

We need to make room for all emotions. We need to let extreme emotions coexist. But we must discern what energy serves us and what we need to release.

In difficult times, grounding is a necessary practice.

The earth is the best recycler. That’s why grounding is so important. Grounding your light into the earth helps you purify your energy automatically. If you want to embody the process so that you are more deeply and strongly grounded, visualize roots growing down from the soles of your feet and connecting you with the center of the earth.

Be a lighthouse: Rise up.

When I was new to healing, I discovered a source that is always available for us: the universal energy. What started as a healing practice for me in 1996 became my main spiritual practice over the years. Spirituality was not something I learned growing up. When I found a spiritual connection as an adult, it felt like home. Naturally, I went through a process of deepening my spirituality, not knowing that I was missing an important element of living as a beacon: grounding.

Embodied spirituality means being anchored from above and below.

As you root your light into the earth, you become ready to invite divine light in.

To be an embodied lighthouse, you need to feel supported by the earth and the divine at the same time. In other words, you can play your role right now and light up the world with your presence if you root yourself from below and above. Otherwise, every little gust of wind will blow you off course.

The “Ground Your Heart” Visualization I created will help you ground from above and below.

Be a lighthouse: Offer vibrations of loving kindness.

The process of awakening that the world is going through right now is calling for a new level of awareness in how people treat each other.

Many people who are part of our Reiki community try to live by one of the Reiki principles: Just for today, be kind to all living things.

During the last few weeks, I have been hosting Facebook Lives for our Reiki community, where we send healing to the world.

Our role as a community is to offer a vibration of love to the world.

We are committed to treating ourselves with Reiki daily—so that we can shift to love and then offer love to the world.

Whether you practice Reiki or not, you’ve got to ask yourself this important question: What vibration are you offering to the world right now?

Protesting, expressing emotions, and voicing our truth are all essential actions for creating change. But let’s not forget to make space for love. Compassion. Kindness.

One of the women from my community shared with me that she gave herself Reiki before and after marching in the streets. When her son asked her where she was going, she said, “I’m going to pray for love and kindness with many other people.”

Being a lighthouse in the midst of the storm is our sacred responsibility right now.

Let’s accept it.

Root down. Rise up. Offer loving kindness. Be a lighthouse.
